It’s well known that smoking cigarettes are bad for us due to the 6,000 chemicals they produce, but there are still 10 million tobacco smokers in the UK.

Using a traditional cigarette burns tobacco and it’s this combustion that produces the chemicals harmful to our health. E-cigarettes do not burn and therefore no combustion. Current evidence suggests that ‘ecigs have at least 95% less toxins in them’ and bystanders inhale much less nicotine from e-cigarette vapour than from second-hand traditional cigarette smoke. (BBC 2)

BBC 2 aired ‘Horizon, E-cigarettes: Miracle or Menace’ where 32 smokers who use at least 20 cigarettes per day, were divided up into 4 groups.

1 – stick to smoking cigarettes

2 – quit ‘cold turkey’

3 – nicotine patches (nicotine replacement therapy)

4 – quitting with ecigs

The experiment showed that the 2 groups which used ecigs and NRT, 7 out of 8 of them managed to keep off cigarettes for the 4 week experiment, showing that these methods are effective.

Research suggests that if you try to quit without any help in terms of electronic cigarettes or NRT, the success rate is just 4% (BBC 2)
