E-liquid for beginners

Choosing the right e-liquid is about so much more than the flavour and packaging on the bottle. But when you're new to vaping and faced with literally hundreds of flavour varieties, it's not always easy to tell what's what. Taste matters

Taste is subjective - there's no one perfect flavour for every person and what you like will come down to a little experimentation.

When it comes time to pick out a flavour, think about what you like to eat and drink to help steer you in the right direction. If you have a well-established sweet tooth, pastry flavours will probably appeal to your taste buds.

Understanding the labels

Before you choose your e-liquid flavour, consider the labels and the information on them. This can tell you a lot about the e-liquids taste and smoothness. Here are some things to look out for:

1. Nicotine strength

E-liquids range in nicotine strength from nicotine-free to something similar to what a 20-a-day smoker is familiar with. What works best for you will depend on whether you're trying to quit smoking, cut back, or completely switch to vaping. Liquid nicotine is measured in milligrams per millilitre - which could be represented as mg, mg/ML or simply as a percentage.

The important thing to note here is they're all giving the same information. 0mg is the same as 0% (zero nicotine), 6mg as 0.6% and so on. Our classic Vapouriz flavours tend to come in a range of options from 0.0% to 2.4%.

The lower the number the lower the nicotine strength; if you're cutting back you'll probably prefer 0.0% to 0.6% nicotine strength. 1.2% is roughly equivalent to 10-a-day, while 1.8% is more like 20-a-day.

2. PG/VG ratio

The PG/VG ratio refers to the two main ingredients in an e-liquid, Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG). PG is what gives e-liquid its throat hit. It has no odour or colour and is a thin liquid. E-liquids with a higher PG ratio tend to be favoured by smokers who like the feeling of mouth to lung vaping and who aren't as concerned with producing huge clouds of vapour. VG on the other hand is sweeter and is what helps create plenty of thick, luscious clouds. A classic e-liquid tends to have anywhere from a 50/50 ratio to a 70/30 PG/VG mix. Sub-Ohm liquids - made for cloud chasing - will have a much higher VG ratio and will be a thicker liquid. You'll find these labelled or marked as "High VG" or 80/20 VG/PG - or any ratio where there is at least 70 VG to 30 PG.

3. Bottle size

The bottle size you choose depends on a few different factors. A small standard bottle of Vapouriz e-liquid is 10ml, which is roughly the equivalent to 100 cigarettes. You can expect a 10ml bottle to last you roughly a week depending on how much you vape. If you're new to vaping or only vape occasionally it may last longer, while if you're vaping regularly you can expect to get through 2ml to 3ml of e-liquid a day, which is typically the amount of liquid a small tank can hold as well.

E-liquids have a long shelf life, so buying in larger quantities sometimes works out to be more convenient and cost efficient. As a general rule, if you're experimenting with new flavours or love to mix and match, choose a smaller bottle size. Go for larger bottle sizes for e-liquids you use daily or when you need to stock up.

4. Classic vs Sub Ohm

When looking to purchase E-liquid for beginners it's important to look at the different devices available. At Vapouriz we carry both Classic and Sub-ohm e-liquids. The main difference between the two is the PG/VG ratio - classic e-liquids are made for standard e-cigs and vape pens, while sub-ohm liquids are specifically designed for sub-ohm devices and box mods.

It's important to use the correct type of eliquid for your vaping device. Classic liquids are thinner and designed to be used in very low powered devices such as e-cigs or vape pens. The juice port holes in an e-cig's atomizer are small and designed to work with the thinner liquid. Using a high VG liquid with these devices will quickly give you dry hits because the e-liquid cannot easily flow through the juice port holes in the atomizer.

On the other hand, High VG liquids are much thicker and specifically designed to be used in high-powered Sub-ohm vape mods. These devices are powerful enough to vaporise the thicker high VG liquids. Using a classic liquid with these devices will quickly present you with leaking and flooding issues, but worse still will be the harsh throat and lung hit - it really isn't pleasant trying to "direct to lung" (the usual way of vaping a sub-ohm vape mod) a classic liquid on a sub-ohm device! Just no!
