World No Tobacco Day: try vaping as an alternative

Every year, World No Tobacco Day takes place on May 31st. The first such day took place back in 1988, with the aim being to reduce the level of illness and death caused by tobacco, and to encourage smokers to try to kick the habit.

The idea of World No Tobacco Day is that smokers from across the globe enjoy a 24 hour period with no tobacco whatsoever. With almost 6 million deaths each and every year being caused by tobacco (600,000 of these deaths being non-smokers who have died as a result of passive inhalation of smoke), the idea is that a 24 hour period without smoking will help smokers to quit for good.

World No Tobacco Day was created by the World Health Organisation (WHO), with every year featuring a different tobacco-linked theme. Previous themes include “Tobacco: deadly in any form or disguise” in 2006 and ″Tobacco-free youth″ in 2008. This year, the theme is around stopping the illicit trading of tobacco products around the world. In 2015, the WHO are aiming to show: how illicit tobacco trading can take revenue from tax and customs, which could have been used for public services; how the lower prices of illicit tobacco can encourage young people to take up smoking; and how such products may not feature the relevant health warnings that are required by law.

On May 31st, huge numbers of people all over the globe will be kicking the habit for an entire 24 hour period in support of World No Tobacco Day, many of these doing so with the intention of cutting back their habit or quitting smoking for good. While some - generally those who smoke just a few cigarettes per day - will be able to manage 24 hours with no problem, others will find it more difficult to manage.

Luckily, there are many alternative products available that still provide a dose of the addictive chemical nicotine, without the harmful compounds that can be found when smoking tobacco. Probably the most popular smoking cessation aid of the last few years is e-cigarettes, which are now used in countries across the globe. Vaping, as it is known, offers liquids available in a huge range of flavours and nicotine strengths, and often makes it easier for smokers to cope without their cigarettes due to the way in which they are used. Best way to give it a go is with a starter pack. This World No Tobacco Day, an e-cigarette could make 24 hours - and even longer - perfectly easily achievable.
